1st Coffee Grind
2023 Squad Event
Members joined squads of three and spent the month tackling language-learning challenges to earn points. Each squad had their own thread to plan, chat, and show off their creativity with custom loyalty cards filled with doodles, memes, and more.
Events rolled out weekly, with a leaderboard to track the squads’ progress. Late joiners could still participate and had their points added to a squad when they joined.
The winning squad walked away with a custom color role, a feature on our Instagram, and a spot in the Hall of Fame!

Start of The Coffee Grind
Today is the start of our first Coffee Grind!
Here is the event summary:
Week 1 Event
We’ll start it off easy with an introduction in your target language of one of your teammates. This is a great way to get to know each other further. The more members of your squad who participate, the more points you will get! (note: the points will be adjusted accordingly for the squads who lost a person so don't worry)
Difficulties:
-
Beginner: Introduce one of your teammates (their name is [name])
-
Intermediate: Introduce one of your teammates in a complex way (name, age, hobbies, friends/family/pets)
-
Advanced: Introduce one of your teammates in a more complex way (dream job, wishes for the future, focusing on theoreticals, subjunctive, etc)
Week 2 Event
BINGO! 🎯 That's right, this week, we are playing squad bingo! (Well not really, it’s just on a bingo shaped card). We have created a Language Immersion Bingo for you squads to complete with your other members. For each bingo box you cross off, you will get one point! (That means you can get up to 25 points this week just from the Coffee Grind event).
If you don't like the activities that we selected, you're free to make your own!
Week 3 Event
Last week we focused on the different types of things you can do to study your target language. This week we will be focusing on consistency but also pop culture and slang!
Here are the new events that are valid for this week only:
For culture and slang
It's time to learn some slang and make some memes for the Week 3 event.
-
Slang: Each person can send in 5 slang words from their target language maximum. Make sure to include their meaning, origin, how it's used in a sentence, etc. Try not to send in the same ones as other people
-
Memes: 3 memes maximum. You can either make memes in your target language or you can find ones that exist out there and give us a translation and explain the context behind it
For consistency
Think Duolingo streak. If you study and send something in #study-streak each day, then the amount of points that you will earn will go up by each day (for example, 3 days in a row will give you three points for that day). If you miss a day, then your streak will go back down to 1 point!
For a special bonus
All points for all events (including the study check in) will stack. That is, the more members of your squad who submit something, the more points you will get for that event For the study check in, the points will stack each time more than one squad member sends a study schedule per day
Since there is going to be variations of points, we are going to have multipliers instead of straight points this week:
-
1 member | x1
-
2 members | x2
-
3 members | x4
