Event Team

  • Narrative, Activities, and Graphics: Kaiku & Kawa

1st Room: Entry

You step into the Language Cafe, holding two wanted posters featuring the faces of the elusive managers, Kawa and Kaiku. Their mysterious disappearance has drawn the attention of many, and your relentless pursuit of hints has led you to this very spot.

The cozy cafe atmosphere surrounds you as patrons engage in hushed conversations, sipping on their beverages. Among them, Salcos, the cafe's diligent host, deftly attends to their needs. A quick glance reveals the opportunity you've been waiting for. As Salcos momentarily turns his attention away, you skillfully slip past him, making your way toward the basement door.

Walking into the depths of the cafe, you find yourself in a dimly lit underground cellar. The single overhead bulb casts long shadows that playfully dance along the edges of the room. Two of the walls are lined with shelving units, displaying ingredients of the beverages served here. In the corner opposite to the stairs, an aged wooden table sits, adorned with unopened envelopes, their contents an enigma, and a flickering candle.

As your eyes adjust to the low light, you spot a folded note on the floor. As you unfold it, a small coin slips from it, landing on the ground. The note bears a request for help: "Help us, we have gotten locked in here and we cannot get out, so we decided to go forward to see if we can find another door. We are leaving you a hint for how to open the first door. We hope it helps. K&K"

With this mysterious message in hand, your quest to locate Kawa and Kaiku takes an intriguing turn, as you prepare to follow the trail they've left behind.

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Staircase; “You go investigate the staircase, and you notice that the door you came through is locked from the outside.”

  2. Barrel; “You lift up the lid of the barrel and see it’s full of bright red apples that you assume were meant for the well known apple pie of the cafe. You take one."

  3. Shelves: “The shelves are full of coffee bean bags. Each contains different blends. When you move one of the bags you find a small metallic hook. You take it.”

  4. Table: “You walk to the table with a brown tea set on it that contains 4 cups. Most of the cups are empty and dry, but there is still steaming tea in the last one. Someone must have been here a while ago. As you open the envelopes you notice they contain study plans for different events, but why would anyone mail these?”

On the locked wooden door there is a riddle carved into it:

I have a tail and a head, but no body. What am I?

(Answer: Coin)

As you say the correct answer the gears in the door start turning, and the door opens.

2nd Room: Food Cellar

Nestled beneath the café, the food cellar beckons with soft lanterns that cast a warm, golden glow. Rows of preserved treasures line wooden shelves, while an impressive wine rack gleams in the dim light. A chalkboard updates itself with daily specials and recommendations, and a gentle breeze rustles through, infusing the air with enchantment. It's a hidden haven where flavors and stories mingle, creating a unique, visual culinary adventure.

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Potted plant: “You go investigate the huge potted plant right next to the door you came from. You’re not sure what plant it is, but you are sure you see something glimmering in the pot. It’s a small key with a pickle keychain. You take it”

  2. Food barrels: “You see four barrels put together leaving a space in the middle. You peek inside and there is a big calico cat eating a fish. It seems like it has gotten stuck to this hole due to its size. You’re helping the cat out, but it seems like it wants to join you."

  3. Rug: “As you’re standing on the rug you notice something is off. There is a small bump near the left corner. As you raise the fabric you see a pile of IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) flashcards. You take them with you.”

  4. Bags: “You see two fabric bags laying against the wall. You take a peek inside and you see yarns and crocheting hooks. Seems like a perfect hobby for cafe workers. You take a hook and a ball of yarn.”

On the door there is a math puzzle:

Vegetable puzzle

Correct Answer
You carve the answer into the door and it opens.

Wrong Answer
You carve the answer into the door but it doesn’t open.

3rd Room: Library

You walk in the room and see bookshelves lining the walls from top to bottom. In one corner, a mysterious parchment updates itself with notable quotes in different languages. A subtle breeze carries the scent of old books and freshly brewed coffee, although there’s no staff member to be found in the building.

This underground library is a sanctuary for book lovers to enjoy their warm drink while reading, nestled into comfortable armchairs and sofas. Next to every seat, there is a small table with a reading lamp.

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Bookshelf: As you look through the books, one catches your eye. It is bound in dark purple cloth and the title is written in golden letters: “The horrors that lurk among us: All Hallow’s Eve”. It seems to be a short story collection about scary and dangerous creatures that appear on All Hallow’s Eve.

  2. Armchair: One of the armchairs looks odd. Its seat is slightly raised. You take off the seat pillow and find a draft of the October newsletter. That means Kawa was definitely here.

  3. Book on a table: An open book is placed face down on a table. When you pick it up, a tiny paper falls out of its pages. It seems to be a receipt for affogato and cinnamon latte.

  4. Two cups of coffee on a table: These cups come from the cafe and have Kawa and Kaiku’s names written on them. One is an Affogato and the other is a Cinnamon Latte.

There is a locked door in front of you with a trivia question:

Language Cafe is a place of many
languages, but how many language learner
roles can you actually have?

(Answer: 45)

Correct Answer
You shout the answer and it opens.

Wrong Answer
You shout the answer but the door doesn’t open.

4th Room: Red Room with Red Country Flags

This room is painted red from floor to ceiling. It looks like a classroom, but even all desks and chairs are the same shade of red. By the corners of the room there are plants growing from the floor which is at least as odd as the feeling of the whole room. The air is dry and a soft wind blows through the cracks on the wall. You could never imagine anyone wanting to study in this room yet for some reason it still exists.

On the door there is a poster with trivia question:

“To gain access to the next room you have to correctly name these four countries based on to their flags:”

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Study book: You find a book with a red cover that is filled with information about flags around the world. Based on the signature on the first page it belongs to Kaiku. Seems like on the last page there is a study log. The last entry is from the 13th of October. You decide to take it so you can return it to Kaiku.

  2. Fabric on the table: You find a neatly folded red velvet fabric. When you lift it, you notice a note under it with a sketch for a curtain and measurements.

  3. Weird plants: Even the plants are red here, and they don’t seem to have been painted. They seem to be small raspberry plants. You take a few raspberries with you.

  4. Statue on a shelf: You walk to the bookshelves to see a small statue that's there. It’s Julius Caesar.

Correct Answer
You say the country names one by one. After a few seconds, the door opens.

Wrong Answer
You say the country names one by one. Nothing happens.

5th Room: Joon’s Office

The office room is large yet sparsely furnished, enveloped in a hard and bright white light coming from above. The room makes you feel uneasy and hurts your eyes.

You find a white work desk in the center of the room. Placed upon the desk is a computer monitor with an inactive screen, a neatly arranged keyboard, and a pristine leather-bound notepad.

Beside the desk, a comfortable chair is upholstered in muted gray fabric, offering ergonomic support for prolonged work sessions. The room's emptiness creates a disturbing work space with only the minimum amount of furniture needed. It’s odd to think that someone would live like this willingly.

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. The desk: All you find on the desk is a yellow post-it stack and a pen.

  2. The drawers: You rummage through the desk’s drawers and you find various language course books: German, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, and even… Rapa Nui and Ainu?

  3. Notepad: The notepad has daily logs with tasks for the cafe and the staff. These seem to stop on October 13th where you see just 2 tasks that are checked:

    1. Kawa

    2. Kaiku

  4. Trashcan: A quick look at the trashcan reveals tons of candy and sweets wrappers. There is an unopened snickers bar which you take with you.

There is a locked door in front of you with a trivia question:

On the door there is a broken frame and on the floor some ripped paper (jigsaw puzzle)

Correct Answer
The completed jigsaw puzzle opens the door and reveals the message.

Wrong Answer
The jigsaw puzzle doesn't seem to fit.

6th Room: Computer Room

This room has several screens monitoring the outside of the building. As you glance over them, there’s nothing out of the ordinary. But wait…. What was that?

Something moved on the third screen pointing to the back of the building. You all look at the screen in horror waiting for any kind of movement, but all you see is a tree swaying in the wind.

There are two locked doors at the other end of the room. Between them there is a keypad with 4 slots. A big red arrow points to a PC screen on a table next to the doors. Following the PC’s cables, you notice it seems connected to both of the doors. Next to it, there are several books and notes on cryptography. The following text is displayed on the screen:

cnkt oy rgtmagmk iglky gttobkxygxe?

(When is Language Cafe's anniversary?)

(Answer: 1206 or 0612 December 6th)

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Notebook on the monitor desk: You look in the notebook and realize that this is a log for the camera system maintenance. The last checkup was done yesterday.

  2. The Monitors: A bright yellow post-it stuck to one of the monitors catches your eye.”Don’t leave the doors open”

  3. Plastic bag with several containers: A receipt from the bag reveals that these contain Orange chicken from Panda Express. And oddly enough, there’s 5 portions. Looks like someone forgot their lunch here

  4. Paper Shredder: The paper shredder is full and there’s a stack of intact papers next to it. Upon browsing them quickly, you notice they are Kawa and Kaiku’s past study logs.

In addition to the investigation points, you will have to choose if you open the door on the left or right.

There is a locked door in front of you with a trivia question:

On the door there is a broken frame and on the floor some ripped paper (jigsaw puzzle)

Correct Answer
The doors don't open and the keypad is reset after a loud beep.

Wrong Answer
You hear gears turning and the doors unlock.

7A (to 8A) Room: Garden Storage Room

It’s hard to see in this room with the only light source being a small lamp on a worktable. Various tools for tending to a garden are here: soil bags, seeds, a heavy rake, a watering can and plant pots. There are plenty of sealed boxes around and on a shelf that lines the wall. The dust is thick in the air.

A door is on the opposite end of the room. It’s carefully carved out of wood, with a pattern that resembles flowers and vines. The handle is made out of bronze and it looks like a branch.

There is a paper taped to the door with a riddle:

You see it rise in the morning

And set when the day is done

It provides us with light and heat

It’s a star that’s called the _____

(Answer: Sun)

Correct Answer

As you say the correct answer a key drops down from the ceiling and you can use it to open the next door.

Wrong Answer

Nothing happens as you say the answer.

7B (to 8B) Room: Garden Storage Room

It’s hard to see in this room with the only light source being a small lamp on a worktable. Various tools for tending to a garden are here: soil bags, seeds, a heavy rake, a watering can and plant pots. There are plenty of sealed boxes around and on a shelf that lines the wall. The dust is thick in the air.

A door is on the opposite end of the room. It’s carefully carved out of wood, with a pattern that resembles a beach and waves. The handle is made out of bronze and it looks like a sea shell.

There is a paper taped to the door with a riddle:

This has hardly any atmosphere

Which means that there is no rain

It’s a place that orbits around the Earth

Which we can see wax and wane

(Answer: Moon)

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Soil Bag: You open the big bag of soil and find a little metal shovel used to move the dirt to pots.

  2. Watering Can: You look in the can and notice a glimmer. When you turn the can upside down, a tiny metal object falls out. You pick it up and notice it is a keychain with a crow.

  3. Small Toolbox: It takes a bit to pry the box open, but it was worth it in the end as you find a hammer. You take it.

  4. A noise you heard from the corner of the room: At first, the noise scares you, but curiosity got the best of you, so you go and investigate the area. When you crouch down, you notice a hole in the wall and two black orbs shining in the darkness. You whisper reassuring words to the tiny creature, and after about a minute, it places a ring in front of you. The ring has the letter K inscribed on the inside.

Correct Answer

As you say the correct answer a key drops down from the ceiling and you can use it to open the next door.

Wrong Answer

Nothing happens as you say the answer.

8A Room: Greenhouse During Day

There is plenty of warm light in this room, and as you look up, you notice the ceiling is made out of slightly opaque glass, looking very similar to a greenhouse. On the left and right there are raised soil beds with tiny plants sprouting. A forgotten watering can lay on top of a soil bed. Pots of various sizes are arranged neatly on shelves above the plant beds.

There is a door at the opposite end of the room with a jigsaw puzzle:

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Glass bottle on the shelf: The bottle is empty and clean. You take it.

  2. Broken floor brush: You see a broken floor brush laying on the ground. It has definitely seen better days but you are quite sure you can give it a new life. You take the stick with you.

  3. A mound of soil: You carefully dig into the soil and find a crumpled piece of paper. As you open it, you read the contents. It is an invoice for:

    1. 3 meter long chain x 2

    2. Iron lock x 2

    3. Duct Tape

    4. Bag of Coffee Grounds x 5

    5. Sardine can x 30

    6. Bread x 6

  4. A pot that’s upside down: Lifting the pot reveals a tiny rat that runs off before you can notice it. A little purple bead is left in its place

Correct Answer

You put together the puzzle and the door opens.

Wrong Answer

The image doesn’t look quite right yet.

8B Room: Greenhouse During Night

This room is also dimly lit, but this time the only light source is the moonlight coming from above. The ceiling is made out of opaque glass, similar to a greenhouse. On the left and right there are raised soil beds with tiny plants sprouting. A forgotten watering can lie on top of a soil bed. Pots of various sizes are arranged neatly on shelves above the plant beds.

Correct Answer

You put together the puzzle and the door opens.

Wrong Answer

The image doesn’t look quite right yet.

9th Room: Small Pond Room

The first thing you notice is the huge pond in the middle of the room. It looks tranquil, although you wonder how this could be built inside a building, and in the basement no less. The floor is filled with sand and several stones mark pathways through the room. On the edges of the room bamboo stalks are growing. Several stone lamps give off dim warm light.

When you get close to the edge of the pond, you can see fish swimming under the water and aquatic plants slowly swaying. Water trickles down from a rocky tower and guides your eyes to something glimmering at the bottom of the pond.

There is another door next to you that doesn’t budge, and a massive wooden door opposite of you with a riddle:

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Pond: Looking more carefully into the pond, you see a box at the bottom of it. It’s too deep to lift by hand. Only if you had something longer to reach it with…
IF YOU GET THE THING OUT: You pull out a book that looks like a diary. It’s locked. Maybe you can find a suitable key for it later. You take the diary with you.

  2. Lily pad: One of the lily pads looks larger than the others. When you lift it, an entire family of frogs greet you.

  3. Stone lamp: One of the stone lamps isn’t lit. One of you carefully puts their hand in it and pulls out a small rolled-up paper. “Salcos, meet me in my office. And bring eggs with you.”

  4. Bamboo stalk: As you walk around the room, you see a small hole in one of the bamboo stalks. You all work together and break the stalk into two. Inside you find a tiny antique key.

On the door there is a riddle:

Vikram is 54 years old and his mother is 80. How many

years ago was Vikram's mother three times his age?

(Answer: 41)

10th Room: Cozy Fireplace Room

As you go through the wooden door, you see a cozy room with dark red brick walls and a fireplace on the right side. The logs burning in the fireplace give off warm light throughout the space. A large red velvet sofa sits in front of the fire, with a fluffy plush carpet in between. On the right of the sofa there is a table with six chairs, and on the right a big monstera plant.

On the left side of the room lay several bookcases, with two wooden antique-looking wardrobes in each corner. A large silver door is directly in front of you with a trivia question:

Who were the founders of Language Cafe? (Mention at least two)

(Answer: Kawa, Salcos, Sloth, Sasa, Jam, Kiwi, Eteri, 6, Laura, Pheo and Joon)

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Wardrobe 1: You stand in front of the towering wardrobe. It has two doors, however, you can only open the lower, larger one. Inside you find a bunch of clothes, jewelry, and sewing machine parts. The clothes are either black or very colorful. You notice the pattern on the top door fits the tiny key you found earlier in the bamboo stalk. Upon opening it, you find a bunch of boardgames, sweets, and mugs.

  2. Bookcases: You look through the bookcases. There’s various genres of books: classics, horror, comics, art-related, scientific, fantasy, and sci-fi. In front of one of the shelves there is a small magazine stand with magazines and unsent sealed letters. When you open the first one, you find a purple crochet granny square. The others have similar squares in different patterns. You take the purple one with you.

  3. Wardrobe 2: You stand in front of the towering wardrobe. It has two doors, however, you can only open the lower, larger one. Inside you find clothing in very dark colors like black and deep olive green. Among the clothes there are piles and piles of sketchbooks filled with unfinished doodles of various themes. By the sketchbooks there is a huge bag filled with different dice; normal six sided ones, a 20-sided one and even one with… weather types? You notice the pattern on the top door fits the tiny key you found earlier in the bamboo stalk. More sketchbooks are found here with doodles of crows, a tarot deck with crows, and some black feathers.

  4. Fireplace: Upon crouching down and looking at the fireplace, you notice a glimmering object almost under the log pile next to it. You pick the item up and see that it is a small key with a dice keychain.

11th Room: Mirror Room

The moment you step into this room, your reflection greets you, sending shivers down your spine. There’s dim light shining from above as luminous squares fill the ceiling. It has been over a week since you started exploring the basement, and you have no idea how long this goes on. One thing is clear: there is no turning back as you hear the door closing behind you.

All the walls are mirrors, some preserving your images, and some deforming them into grotesque looking figures. After wandering for what feels like forever, when you turn around a corner you see a yellow post-it stuck to one of the mirrors: “Choose a side to escape.”

After ten minutes of walking, you come across four wooden chests. You open three of them, then move on.

After about an hour or two, you arrive in front of two wooden doors, your feet aching from the walk through the maze. The left door has a cat shaped handle and the right door has a hedgehog shaped one. A key lies on top of a red velvet pillow inside a glass case. Above the case, a yellow note says: “Choose ONE.” You open the case and take the key out.

Who were the founders of Language Cafe? (Mention at least two)

(Answer: Kawa, Salcos, Sloth, Sasa, Jam, Kiwi, Eteri, 6, Laura, Pheo and Joon)

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Chest 1: This chest has several cereal bars and water bottles which you gladly take.

  2. Chest 2: This chest has a mini fridge inside with ice cream and refreshing drinks which you take.

  3. Chest 3: This chest has a family of rats sleeping peacefully inside. You leave the lid open in case they want to leave.

  4. Chest 4: This chest has a bunch of drawing supplies and a sketchpad with “Cafetober” written on it.

This room is a maze. Once you have walked through it the key will be given automatically without extra puzzles.

12A Room: Room Full of Cats

In a cozy, windowless room, a delightful scene unfolds amid the warm glow of flickering oil lamps. The space is a sanctuary for hedgehogs, their tiny quills catching the soft light like stars in the night sky.

Nestled amongst the prickly residents are plush armchairs and a velvet sofa, their rich colors contrasting beautifully with the hedgehogs' earthy tones. A rustic coffee table stands in the center, adorned with books and cups of tea, patiently waiting to be enjoyed. The hedgehogs move about, occasionally pausing to explore the nooks and crannies of the room and sniffing the air.

On the door there is a riddle:

I come in multiple different sizes, and during bad days I can run

constantly without even having legs. When I run, I frustrate people

and drive them crazy, Yet I don't even have to move to irritate you.

(Answer: [Runny] Nose)

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Velvet sofa: You all lay on the sofa and take a moment to relax. One of you feels something poking their back. As you inspect the place, you find a hole in the sofa which hides a small notepad. These are sketches and chaotic notes about future LC events.

  2. Coffee Table: One of the cups is empty save for a pair of skeleton earrings. You take them with you.

  3. A loose floor plank: Lifting the plank, you find a sealed stash of worms. You quickly cover the hole, afraid of what might happen if the hedgehogs smelled it.

  4. A box: The box is filled with pickle jars. You take one with you.

Feeding the hedgehogs makes them very happy. They love fresh berries. The largest hedgehog brings you a heavy statue of a porcupine.

13th Room: Workshop

As you step into the room, you notice that papers and pens are scattered all over the place, making it hard to move through the space. In the center of the room lies a massive wooden table with all sorts of technical drawings and gadgets. One of the gadgets resembles a cat made out of mechanical components and gears.

IF THEY HAVE IPA FLASHCARDS:

After staring at the puzzle for a while you remember the IPA flashcards you have collected earlier. As you go through them you find a few cards with words/symbols similar to what is written onto the door:

  • əv - of

  • ˈfju.t͡ʃə˞  - future

  • ðowz - those

  • pwʃ - push

There is a door in front of you with an IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) puzzle:

/dɔɹz əv ðə ˈfju.t͡ʃə˞ ɑɹ ˈow.pɪn tu ðowz hu now haw tu pwʃ ðɛm/

(Answer: Doors of the future are open to those who know how to push them.)

Investigation points (select three, order doesn't matter):

  1. Cat Gadget: You carefully touch the mechanism and it springs to life. At first, it tilts its head and scans you all, then its eyes turn red and it lets out a mechanical purr. You continue petting the mechanical cat.

  2. Wooden Table: Examining the wooden table closer, you find drawings for animal-looking gadgets. Buried under the plans, there is a small olive green notebook with “Kaiku” written on it. You think this is Kaiku’s journal after browsing it.

  3. Papers on the floor: You split up across the room and look at the papers on the floor: magazine pages, papers with illegible handwriting, takeout menus, flyers, and sketches. One of you finds a small pink notebook with “Kawa” written on it. You think this is Kawa’s journal after browsing it.

  4. Shelves: There’s neatly organized drawing and writing supplies on the shelves. Among them you find two heavy mechanical pencils with Kaiku and Kawa’s name on them.

14th Room: Kawa and Kaiku's Room

This room is filled with the smell of old coffee and tea. Piles and piles of paper are taking space on the shelves along with storage boxes. The only light in the room is coming from an old PC that is partly covered by two shadows. Wait. It’s Kawa and Kaiku.

They tell you that Joon chained them in this room without explaining why. They don’t know how much time passed, but they ate 24 out of the 30 sardine cans in the room, so it must have been more than 10 days at least. There’s a door with a bright green exit sign on the opposite side from where you came from. The end is in sight.

Different Endings & How to Achieve Them

Kaiku & Kawa are saved + party escapes:

Keys (2) to open chain locks OR tool to break them

Keys:

You have the keys for both of their chains and you make quick work to free them. Together you escape through the door. Looking back, you notice a figure staring out of one of the windows.

Hammer/Tools:

You have a heavy tool which you use to break both of their chains. Together you escape through the door. Looking back, you notice a figure staring out of one of the windows.

Final Text:

As the door swings open, you step into a dimly lit office space. The room is filled with the smell of old coffee and tea. Stacks of files teeter on the shelves, seemingly on the verge of inundating the room. Faint sounds emanate from the corner, akin to the rhythmic tapping of a keyboard. You approach cautiously, the source of the noise slowly coming into focus - two human silhouettes. The typing halts, and they pivot to face you. The moment they recognize you, their expressions transform into welcoming smiles.

"You've come to rescue us!" they exclaim in unison.

Kaiku points towards the diary you'd discovered in the pond. "Wait… That's... I believe it's Joon's. Where did you find it?"

You recount how you retrieved it from the pond but express uncertainty about opening it.

"Perhaps this will work," Kawa suggests, producing a tiny key from her pocket. "I stumbled upon it on the floor shortly before I was confined."

As the managers rise to their feet, the sound of chains jingling reaches your ears. Kawa and Kaiku have been bound to the wall with chains.

"Oh, I completely forgot about these restraints," Kawa remarks. "Do you have anything we can use to break free?"

You rack your brain and remember the small keys you've collected. Trying them on the locks, you realize that the dice key opens Kawa's restraint, and the pickle key frees Kaiku. They are no longer bound.

"But how do we escape from here? The doors are locked," you point out.

"I recall seeing Joon simply push the doors open as she departed, and the last one should show the way," Kaiku reflects.

Together, you return to the door you entered from and give it a forceful shove, causing it to yield. You progress through the workshop and apply the same tactic to the next door.

"It's working! Now, let's make our escape!" Kawa urges.

With determination, you sprint through the rooms you've traversed thus far, eventually reaching the deserted cafe. You burst through the front door, your beloved managers no longer absent, and freedom within your grasp.

Kaiku is saved + party escapes:

  • Key (1, Kaiku’s) to open chain lock, NO tool to break them

Only Kaiku’s chain is unlocked with the key you gathered.

‘It’s okay, I’ll be fine. You guys run away while you can!’ Kawa encourages your group to escape. ‘...and watch Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure in my memory’

Together you escape through the door, wondering what kind of fate awaits Kawa. Looking back, you notice a figure staring out of one of the windows.

Final Text:

As the door swings open, you step into a dimly lit office space. The room is filled with the smell of old coffee and tea. The room is filled with the smell of old coffee and tea. Stacks of files have piled on the shelves, seemingly on the verge of inundating the room.

You rack your brain and remember the small key you've collected. Trying it on the locks, you realize that the pickle key frees Kaiku. But where is Kawa’s key? You have no time to think about that. You take the hammer from your bag and smash Kawa’s chain. It breaks from the force you used, and neither of them are no longer bound.

The chains don’t budge, no matter what you attempt to do in order to break them. Kawa and Kaiku urge you to escape by yourselves while you still can, and that they appreciate your effort to free them.

Secret Ending: Joon's intentions get revealed:

  • Joon’s diary, found from fishing in Room 9

    • Requires following items

      • Hook - Room 1

      • Yarn - Room 2

      • Stick - Room 9

    • Will remain locked until the very last room where Kawa and Kaiku tell they have accidentally found a key to it

The chains don’t budge, no matter what you attempt to do in order to break them. Kawa and Kaiku urge you to escape by yourselves while you still can, and that they appreciate your effort to free them.

Kaiku points to the diary you found in the pond. ‘That’s…I think that’s Joon’s. Where did you find it?’

You reply that you fished it out of the pond and don’t know how to open it.

‘Maybe this works?’ Kawa asks as she pulls out a tiny key from her pocket. ‘I found it on the floor shortly before I was locked away.’

The key fits perfectly and with a few turns, the diary opens. In it, you find Joon’s research on spirits and monsters that appear during Halloween. There are also several cut outs from newspapers with missing people, all around this time of the year and in your area. Could it be that Joon was trying to… protect you by locking you in the depths of the basement?
