What is a language exchange partner? How do I find someone?

A language exchange partner is someone with whom you do a "language exchange", meaning you help them practice one of their target languages and they help you with one of yours. A language exchange is beneficial not only because of the practice potential, but also since you can learn more about each other's culture and keep yourselves accountable.

However, finding a language exchange partner can prove to be difficult. One place to look for someone is on our Discord Server in the #find-exchange-partner channel. Post a message following the template and look for people speaking your target language.

You can also see more options from our server here.

How can I use your server to learn languages or study?

Honestly it’s completely up to you! People use it in different ways based on what they're aiming to get out of it. In each of the language channels, you can speak in English and the respective channel's language. For example in the Spanish channel, you can speak English and Spanish in there.

Here's some highlights:

  • Practice talking in your target language(s) with native speakers and other learners who can correct you.

  • Participate in regular language practice events and server events.

  • Find an exchange partner.

  • Join others in study sessions and ask for study advice.

  • Use the Language Practice Voice Channels to chat and practice.

  • Play along in our language games like shiritori and letter change.

Why should I learn a foreign language?

Learning a foreign language has a lot of benefits. You'll be able to connect and talk to a lot of people, learn more about their culture, and improve your understanding of various topics. Learning a language is not done in a vacuum — often times you will have to read or watch content in your target language which inevitably teaches you more about the world.
